History of the EUR pallet
An invention from the Second World War
The wooden stool was developed by an American military officer during World War II and came to Europe with the invasion of Normandy.
The pallets were used to transport materials and supplies and had dimensions of 32 x 48 inches (813 x 1219 mm) and 40 x 80 inches (1016 x 2032 mm).
At the end of the war, Allied troops left hundreds of thousands of pallets behind in Europe. The railway administrations of most European countries realized the importance of using pallets and trucks for the rational handling of goods. The International Union of Railways (UIC) therefore standardized the dimensions of the pallets left behind by the Allies.
The smaller pallet, considered most suitable for the distribution of groceries, became the EUR pallet. In Sweden, it is often called the SIS pallet or the SJ pallet. In connection with a revision of the standard in the 1970s, the dimensions of the EUR pallet were set at 800 x 1200 mm.
In today's environmentally conscious society, we can hardly think of a better and more practical load carrier than a wooden returnable pallet, can we?
